Wiki Page: Tiling Tips

ContextCapture Processing is CPU and GPU intensive. To prevent memory overflow in case of large datasets, it is recommended to apply tiling to the reconstruction. In ContextCapture, when creating a new reconstruction, a warning appears if the block contains a large quantity of data. In that case we recommend using tiling Tiling settings and recommendations The Tiling setup mode options are accessible from the “Spatial Framework” tab of your reconstruction. There are 3 types of tiling: Regular planar grid Regular volumetric grid Adaptive tiling Optimal tile size There are two aspects to be considered regarding the tile size: More tiles mean more jobs to execute Bigger tiles mean a longer processing time per tile. The threshold of when it is no longer beneficial to increase the tile size depends on the global performance of your machine. For typical processing using a computer with a good CPU, good GPU and 64 Gb of RAM, the optimal maximum RAM target (depending on your tile size selection) is 25 Gb. Regular planar and volumetric grid These types of tiling are defined by their size (in meters). Regular planar grid is recommended for Mapping project. You can choose the size of the square defining the tile. Regular volumetric grid can be used for assets that are captured from all angles. However, we would recommend using adaptive tiling in such cases. You can define the size of the cube that represents a tile. When selecting the size for one of these tiling modes, an “Expected maximum RAM usage” is displayed. Adjust the tile size so that it fits your hardware capabilities and/or the optimal tiling size. Adaptive tiling Adaptive tiling will be defined based on the maximum RAM you want to allocate to your ContextCapture Processing. The tiling will be automatically generated so that no tile should require more RAM than the defined limit. This type of tiling results in an optimized size and distribution of the tiles. It is recommended for projects for which the resolution can dramatically change (with the addition of close-ups for example), or for project in full 3D such as buildings, towers, bridges, etc. Error message If the tiling is not correctly set, or the RAM estimation is too big for your computer, the following error message may appear: “Failed: insufficient memory. You may solve this issue by subdividing the reconstruction into smaller tiles. Please review your reconstruction settings.” If you are getting this error, we recommend adding tiling or reducing the tile size as mentioned.

Forum Post: link a cell from an excel file to a new property definition

Hello, I have created a spread sheet in excel with the properties of some items. In Descartes I created an item type library with item types and properties definition. I am wondering if there is a way to link the cells from the spread sheets to the properties definition in a way that if I have a value in the spread sheet this is linked to the properties definition automatically in a way I just need to update the spread sheet. For example if the property in the spread sheet excel file for purchased date is 20/04/2019 and I have to change it to a different value like 12/04/2020, if that is updated automatically in the descartes item properties. Thanks Regards Roberto

Hi Tomasz, This works very nicely and sorry for just noticing your post. You need to publish the iModel as a 3SM to Context Share and then reference into your model and then publish your iModel to iModelHub. Then you will see Reality Mesh will be streamed into your iModel Of course reach out if you have more questions Will post a link to the step by step instructions and get them posted today

communities.bentley.com/.../Rapport_5F00_KarlstadC.pdf I have done a production both with and without GCP and none of them give me accurate heights when I am taking measurements in the viewer. The quality report looks good, see the attached pdf. XY coordinates diff app 1-2 cm but the height 20-30 cm. What can I do to make the heights better?

I agree with all of your points, and have had similar struggles. The lack of information and support to enable reliable clusters is incredibly frustrating and has me constantly evaluating alternative products. If you made any progress since posting (or even if not!), I'd love to chat some time. My email is josh@trendspek.com

Try to request a demo here - https://www.bentley.com/en/about-us/contact-us/sales-contact-request Or also request to try Contextcapture as it includes Contextcapture Editor which is in some part based on Bentley Descartes - https://www.bentley.com/en/products/product-line/reality-modeling-software/bentley-descartes But it can take time(weeks) to get response as sometimes request doesn't get forwarded to correct Bentley Channel Partner .

Thank you for your share... But I want to cut Objects model which are collected by Scan 3D. Can Context Capture do this? Thanks so much!

Yes Contextcapture can process Point Clouds also. But it depends as if you have a 3D model already then Contextcapture will not be suitable for editing but you can create cut sections in Bentley Descartes/Contextcapture Editor . You should explain your workflow in more details and what are expected results.

Some questions: UAV model? Flight plan Nadir, Angled camera? Flight altitude? Keep in mind that P4 gives barometic altitudes and not GPS altitudes . If using P4 RTK then you have correct GPS altitudes but need to correct after import the secret one-time programmable setting " GPS altitude reference " to WGS84 ellipsodial height. If GCPs are using local geoid and you use P4 RTK then you could also add your national geoid but beware of consequences . Also do not use all GCPs as control point, set some of them in between as checkpoints. The model is warped on top of GCPs so it shows only if some GCPs are wrong relative to others but not the absolute error. Check points and now in Update15 also constraints can be used to check absolute accuracy. Also merge the both photo blocks in one so it doesn't calculate different calibrations for same camera. If it is Nadir flight try to reuse calibration . Using both RTK positions and many GCPs doesn't improve accuracy see my tests in CC U15 best if using RTK is to use RTK and only some GCPs or all GCPs as checkpoints.

Hello all, I have many .3mx files that I generated years ago in ContextCapture - however, the original photos that created them have been lost. I know that you can generate .stl files, but is there a way to convert .3mx files to .stl? I have not found any software that can do this. Thanks for your help! Hannah

You don't need to use so much GCPs in latest Contextcapture Update 15. Just use some for adjust and others as checkpoints. Using both RTK and lot of GCPs doesn't improve results. No need for RTK UAV if using lots of GCPs you lose lot of time. So do as follows: Add RH2000 geoid if it is not already available in Contextcapture. Import Photos Change "GPS altitude reference" to WGS 84 in status bar where it shows that last xxx photos were imported using MSL. Merge all photogroups so it doesn't calculate different calibrations for each photogroup. Run first aerotriangulation with accurate metadata option. Import GCPs and choose your SRS+RH2000 geoid as vertical system override. Add some surveys in corners and some points in middle. All other points leave as checkpoints. Run aerotriangulation with RTK+GCP see this document Check results.

3mx format is open format so it is possible for programmer to create conversion tool. Alternatively just open 3mx in Microstation, click on 3mx with info tool and set export resolution. Afterwards export to STL. If closed mesh is needed then drop 3mx to mesh and use mesh close tool and then export to STL.
